FAQs and a Guide to considering Roho Pressure Cushions

Roho offers a large range of Roho cushions and it can be challenging knowing which cushion is the right one for you. As a starting point, if you are considering Roho here are some of the most commonly asked questions. We’ve also put together a graph as a guide to selecting a cushion to suit your needs.

How do I choose the right cushion for periods of long sitting?

If you require prevention of pressure ulcers and deep tissue injury along with pain relief then the Roho High Profile Single Compartment and Roho High Profile Dual Compartment would be the most suitable. The Roho Quadtro select – High Profile also offers the best immersion and envelopment. These are important factors to consider as it helps to maintain the shape of the body and allows the users weight to distribute across the greatest area, across the thighs, hips (trochanters) and buttocks (ischial tuberosities). This results in improved comfort, reduction in the risk of pressure uclers (pressure sores), a decrease in peak pressures and may also reduce pain. Tissue deformation can also be minimised which is the main cause of deep tissue injury. it is important to note that there is no cushion which is able to effectively prevent or heal all pressure ulcers in all patients especially due to the individual, intrinsic risk of each person.

Can I use a Roho cushion for periods of long sitting or do I still need to have some movement or pressure relief?

It is definitely possible to increase sitting times from a few hours up to 16 hours. It is important that you strictly follow pressure relief procedures as directed by your healthcare professional. Part of this procedure will be to consistently monitor your skin to determine what period of time your skin can withstand the sitting before signs of redness appear.

Are Dry Floatation Cushions suitable for use with pressure ulcers?

Yes, these cushions are designed for Stage 1, 2 or 3 ulcers. You are able to sit directly on the cushion as long as your pressure sore is monitored frequently. These cushions are able to redistribute pressure, minimise

What is the safe user weight (safe working load) for my cushion?

It is imperative that you choose the right size cushion for your stature and your chair and you should consult with your healthcare professional for guidelines on sizing. Based on this you will achieve the safe user weight for your cushion.

Can I place an incontinence pad, towel, sheet or sling over a Roho cushion or mattress?

Roho increases the contact area through immersion and envelopment when you sink into them. This redistributes the weight so that there are minimal peak pressures. When anything is placed between you and the cushion or mattress, surface tension increases and it becomes more difficult to sink into the Roho. You can then create a high pressure point for the pad, towel etc.

Can I use a Roho cushion without a cover?

Anything placed over a cushion can interfere with the increase in contact area through immersion and envelopment whien sinking into the product. This happens by increasing the surface tension, making it more difficult to sink into the cushion. Roho covers allow the least amount of surface tension creation and therefore it is not recommended to use a cushion cover other than the Roho with the exception of Air/Foam combination cushions. All air/foam combination cushions must be used with their Roho cover. All other Roho cushions can be used without the supplied cover especially if there is no risk that the cells will be caught in something. The cushions however should not be used with something other than Roho Covers.

How often should I check my Dry Floatation cushion for proper inflation?

You should perform a hand check on a daily basis. This only takes a few seconds. A full adjustment procedure is only required when necessary.

For information on how to best care for your cushion, ensure you follow these guidelines:

  • Ensure there are no sharp objects in your pocket when you sit down on the cushion.
  • Do not expose the cushion to open flame or extreme heat.
  • The best way to carry the cushion is with the yellow rope or cushion base. You can also use the carry handle on the cover. Avoid pulling at or carrying the cushion by the cells, inflation valve, quick disconnect or ISOFLO Memory Control.
  • Ensure neoprene covers are not exposed to petroleum based solutions such as lanolin. This will degrade the material.
  • Do not void the warranty by making any modifications to the cushion or any of the components. Ensure you use a Roho repair kit and Roho cushion cover.
