Quadriplegia / Paraplegia

Quadriplegia, otherwise referred to as Tetraplegia, is identified as either partial or complete paralysis of both the upper and lower body, disabling movement from the shoulders down caused by neck injury.  Comparatively, Paraplegia is either the partial or complete paralysis of the lower body caused by a back injury. At Patient Handling, we offer a range of products to assist with enabling independent living and the best quality care.

Quadriplegia / Paraplegia

Quadriplegia, also known as tetraplegia, is a type of paralysis that affects all four limbs and the trunk and torso. It is caused by damage to the spinal cord, which is the bundle of nerves that carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body. The higher the level of injury on the spinal cord, the more severe the paralysis will be.

The symptoms of quadriplegia depend on the level of injury and can range from partial loss of movement and sensation to complete paralysis. Symptoms may include:

  • Loss of movement and sensation in the arms and legs.
  • Difficulty with breathing.
  • Problems with bladder and bowel control problems.
  • Muscle pain or stiffness.

Quadriplegia can be caused by traumatic injuries, such as a car accident or a fall, or by non-traumatic causes, such as a spinal cord tumour or a degenerative disease.

There is currently no cure for quadriplegia, but there are treatments available to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. These include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to help with mobility and communication; medications to manage pain and muscle spasms; and assistive devices such as wheelchairs, braces and communication aids.

It’s important to note that quadriplegia is a lifelong condition that requires ongoing management and care. With the right treatment and support, individuals with quadriplegia can lead fulfilling lives.

Paraplegia is a type of paralysis affecting the body’s lower half, including both legs, the hips, and the trunk. It is caused by damage to the spinal cord, which is the bundle of nerves that carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body. The level of injury on the spinal cord will determine the severity of the paralysis.

Symptoms of paraplegia depend on the level of injury and can range from partial loss of movement and sensation to complete paralysis. Symptoms may include:
